Throw in a Ditch Bag Before You Go Out to Sea

Contrary to the common interpretation of its name, a ditch bag is not something you should even consider dumping when you find yourself in an unfortunate situation out in the sea. In fact, it should be the first thing you grab from your boat (or just about any other vehicle you use when you venture into the great outdoors) if you are caught in an unfortunate situation in the middle of nowhere.

Ditch bags, or ditchbags, are basically survival kits made of waterproof, buoyant material. These bags are essentially for boaters and contain various items needed for survival – anything from food, drinking water, flares, portable GPS’, transmission radios and small medical kits. When your boat catches on fire or starts to sink, you need to have a ditch bag that will help you survive on your own until help gets to you.

That being said, take time to plan what you put in it. Do not just throw all sorts of survival things in it half-heartedly. Think about the things you need in case of an emergency and ditch them (orderly so) into the bag.

Don’t ditch the ditch bag – it may just save your life.
