This is a full DOT Emergency Medical Technician program followed by a Wilderness Medical Associates WEMT Upgrade course. Training will take place daily, Monday through Friday, for four weeks. Each student will also spend at least ten weekend hours observing and assisting in a hospital emergency department.

The EMT + WEMT Upgrade curriculum is comprehensive and demanding, and will require your full attention and dedication. In return, we promise a superior training experience led by instructors who really practice what they preach. Our emphasis on the understanding of body systems and medical principles is designed to give you the skills and confidence to adapt and respond to medical problems anywhere. When you finish this course you should understand what needs to be done whether you are riding an ambulance on urban streets or providing medical support for a wilderness rescue team.

Successful completion of the course qualifies you for the EMT-B exam offered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Your WEMT certificate from Wilderness Medical Associates becomes valid when you receive your NREMT credentials.

The tuition fee includes all books and course materials. Students are responsible for their own travel to the course, local field training sites, and to local field training sites, and for hospital observation time. Housing is available in numerous B&B’s and inns, including the International Hostel in Crested Butte. Camping is available in primitive sites and established campgrounds in the surrounding Gunnison National Forest. Please see the travel and course sites page for more information.

All candidates will be subjected to a background check required by our hospital affiliate. We reserve the right to accept or reject applications based on this information.

Please note: training and certification, alone, does not authorize the use wilderness medical protocols. State and local regulations and medical control systems vary considerably. Check with your state EMS office or your medical control physician.
